Remember when you were exposed to polystyrene foam for the first time? You might have been at a fast food store as a child and you were given a drink.

In 1839 a bright chemist started experimenting with storax, a substance or resin which is from the Turkish sweet gum tree. He finally managed to distill some which looked and felt almost jelly like. This transformed due to oxidation. He was very excited as all sorts of uses could be made of such a material.

A German company began to manufacture it approximately in 1931 in the hopes that it would be used to replace die-cast zinc. After a few successful attempts, polystyrene was produced in pellet form. In 1959 and company in Pittsburgh developed the substance into and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), as we know it today. The foam is produced by using blowing agents that form bubbles which expand the foam.

This foam is an excellent thermal insulator which is often used in the construction industry as insulation panels. They are also used in ornamental pillars as a non-weight-bearing architectural structure.

Expanded foam is mainly white, compacted together to form a smooth surface. The uses are also mainly for industry like packaging materials for those fragile items we need to contain and ship. They are most commonly are prepared in sheets of four by eight or two by eight square feet and are called bead boards.

Because it has become such an integral part of our lives, the recycling part of it is still leaving many researches with headaches. They are however making strides for the industrial sector whereby a more heavier foam is looked at. This heavier foam will be better recycled and can generate cash for many recycling programs. It is for now recycled under the number 6.

Whether it’s polystyrene foam or a solid form you need for disposable cutlery or DVD cases, or just plain old drinking cups, the industry has it all. We just need to be responsible and try not to pollute our environment until the scientists have found a way for us to recycle with care.
